Angela Wins the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest!

25 May 2013 Article
Angela Marshall won the collegiate division of the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest for Pedagogical Piano Works.

Angela's piece Romanza was recently named the winner of the collegiate category in the Lynn Freeman Olson composition contest. This is a national contest that encourages unpublished composers to create pedagogical works for piano.

"Romanza is a revised version of Romanza Chirico, which I wrote for my childhood best friend's wedding," Angela said. "I worked with my thesis mentor W. T. Skye Garcia to condense the piece so it fit the competition guidelines. I was in graduate school at the University of Oklahoma and he was teaching at East Central University. Looking back, I'm not sure how we managed to find the time to polish the composition, but I'm glad we did."

Angela is W. T. Skye Garcia's seventh student to win the Lynn Freeman Olson competition. Many past winners have been published by major publishing houses and featured in competition repertoire lists.

"I'm excited about what the future will bring," Angela said. "I'm excited to keep composing and see what happens."
